Student Groups Seek to Restore Language in DOE Guidance

Christian Legal Society, alongside other ministries with students chapters in public schools around the country, sent a letter to the Secretary of Education Linda McMahon requesting some important updates to the “Guidance on Constitutionally Protected Prayer and Religious Expression in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools.” The Guidance has been a longstanding description of the rights of students and teachers across numerous administrations, and the groups are thankful for its clarity and stability over the years. The letter conveyed the groups’ appreciation that the 2026 update continued to express strong support for prayer and religious expression in schools. The letter indicated the groups’ concern that the 2026 update did not include some of the specific descriptions of student rights that have been very helpful over the years in engaging with school administrators and therefore requested that some of that language be restored.
