The Maryland Office of the Public Defender (OPD) seeks experienced, zealous, and dedicated attorneys to serve as Assistant Public Defenders in OPD’s Post Conviction Defenders Division. OVERVIEW OF POSITION:
Assistant Public Defenders combine their demonstrated dedication to the representation of indigent clients with their strong litigation skills to provide exceptional representation in post conviction proceedings, and where applicable, in proceedings involving motions for modification, requests for drug treatment, and other similar motions. Post Conviction Defenders are expected to work independently in managing active caseloads while simultaneously working in a team-oriented environment focused on a client-centered approach to representation. The position will be located in Baltimore City, Maryland but will involve travel to circuit courts and institutions operated by the Department of Corrections across Maryland. We will consider candidates at all experience levels.

Salary or salary range: $84,225 – $122,774
Requirements: Active membership in good standing with the State of Maryland Bar or Bar of another state. OPD will consider individuals who are sitting for the February 2024 bar examination. If selected, offers will be extended contingent on membership to the bar in advance of the start date. Preference in the selection process will be given to candidates who are already a member of the bar. Attorneys barred in another state must become a member of the Maryland bar within 18 months of the start date.
