About Us
Houston Legal Aid Center (HLAC) is a Christian non-profit organization whose mission is providing redeeming justice for the poor, vulnerable, and victimized. We are dedicated to offering holistic legal support and advocacy in the areas of family and immigration law to those in need, driven by our faith and commitment to serving the community with compassion and integrity.
Position Overview
HLAC is seeking a passionate and dedicated Legal Fellow for a one-year fellowship. The Fellowship will be focused on training a new generation of legal professionals to serve God by serving the poor, vulnerable, and victimized. The Legal Fellow will work closely with our legal team to provide direct legal services in immigration and family law. Additionally, Fellows will be trained in nonprofit ministry management and integrating faith-based principles in legal practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Appropriately pray and share the Gospel with HLAC clients
- Work with HLAC family law, immigration law, and executive staff to accomplish curriculum goals on current and new cases
- Work with HLAC staff remotely and at the main Houston office location Monday through Friday to provide legal assistance to clients, including but not limited to, case preparation, representation, and follow-up
- Accompany HLAC staff to required court hearings and mediations
- Assist in organizing and attend HLAC sponsored clinics, partnership events, and fundraisers as may be required during the work week or on the weekends
- Aid in the continued development and evaluation of the HLAC fellowship program
- Incorporate Christian faith principles into all aspects of work, demonstrating compassion, integrity, and a commitment to redeeming justice
Qualifications
- Admission to the bar in Texas (or eligibility for admission).
- Evidences a mature relationship with Jesus Christ with a calling to serve the poor, vulnerable, and victimized
- Agreement and adherence with HLAC’s doctrinal statement and standards of Christian ethics
- Excellent English reading, writing, and speaking ability
- Computer proficiency
- Entrepreneurial, takes initiative, organized, and punctual
- Compassionate, empathetic, and culturally sensitive approach to working with diverse populations
- No criminal background disqualifications

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with non-profit organizations.
- Bilingual skills (English/Spanish or other relevant languages such as French, Dari/Farsi or Arabic).
- Prior fellowship or internship experience in a similar setting.
