Description:

Part-time,[1] limited-term independent contract for advocacy services.

Term: Ending no later than November 2026, unless terminated by either party sooner with or without cause.

The Christian Legal Society (CLS) is a fellowship of Christians dedicated to serving Jesus Christ through the practice of law (Attorney Ministries), the defense of religious freedom and life (the Center for Law & Religious Freedom), by nurturing and encouraging Christian law students (Law Student Ministries), and providing Christian Legal Aid to the poor and needy (Christian Legal Aid).

Position Description:

  • Advocate in person in Washington, D.C., advancing Christian Legal Society’s position on proposed legislation and agency regulations affecting religious freedom and/or the protection of human life.
  • Develop with CLS’ Center For Law & Religious Freedom a strategy to build bridges with opponents, alliances with allies, and persuasion with government decisionmakers.
  • Implement that strategy under direction of the Center director, targeting key legislators, office and committee staff, federal agencies, and other nongovernmental advocates.

Qualifications:

  • Mature Christian faith. Affirm in writing the CLS Statement of Faith and agree to abide at all times in personal behavior by the CLS Community Life Statement.
  • Have at least three years of policy experience in a U.S. House or Senate office or committee staff.
  • Be a quick study in the law of religious freedom.
  • Preferably have J.D. degree from a reputable and ABA-approved school of law.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Skilled in articulating complex legal arguments to laypeople in persuasive, winsome, respectful manner.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills. Successful experience in building and working with alliances across partisan and/or theological lines.
  • Ability to work independently in planning and implementing programs. A strategic and tactical thinker; takes direction easily.

Compensation: Hourly (negotiable) as independent contractor, not employee.
