2018 Northeast Regional Retreat

DATE:

February 23-25, 2018

WHERE:

Frost Valley YMCA, Claryville, NY

ABOUT EVENT:

Come join Christian law students, attorneys, and their families at the Frost Valley YMCA for a time of spiritual renewal, relaxation, and fellowship at the Northeast Regional Retreat in Claryville, NY, February 23-25, 2018.

We’ll offer an hour of CLE, seminars, and workshops for lawyers and law students, and plenty of time for relaxation and fellowship! As always, we’ll eat as a group in the Frost Valley dining hall, and we will have full access to all the activities at Frost Valley, including cross-country skiing and downhill tubing. Below is a full description of the retreat, pricing, and accommodations.

For law students, there will be additional times of fellowship and sharing, a late-night campfire, weather and wood permitting, and several breakout workshops. Students are invited to attend at a deeply reduced rate (see below).

2018 RETREAT SPEAKER: BRENT AMATO

Brentheadshot.jpg

Brent Amato is back at the retreat by popular demand! He will be leading three sessions on Joy in the Law, based on his devotional series and the CLS conference theme this year. He will lead us into ample times of discussion and sharing.

Brent practiced transactional law in the Chicago area for forty years, specializing in corporate business and non-profit work. That practice was split about equally between private practice as a partner at two law firms and in-house corporate practice for two publicly-traded companies, first as an Associate Counsel and then as General Counsel. On December 31, 2014 he retired from the practice of law.

During those years and since, Brent has sought to integrate his Christian faith and his law practice through (i) the Christian Legal Society (as former Board member and President and now Staff member; working with lawyers and law students), (ii) Peacemaker Ministries and Crossroads Resolution Group (as a Certified Christian Conciliator for conflict resolution, mentor and teacher), (iii) Administer Justice and Gospel Justice Initiative (whose missions are to meet the legal and spiritual needs of the poor) and Judson University (as a Business Law Adjunct Professor).

Brent is married, the father of two children and grandfather to five. For more information, visit his website.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Attorneys and Families

The registration fee for attorneys is $215. Spouses pay the reduced rate of $115. Children 6–17 are $94 an 5 and younger are FREE. This cost includes all programming and meals:

Programming includes our meeting space, CLE, breakouts, and all activities at the YMCA, including snow-tubing, archery, broom-ball, cross-country skiing (and skis), floor hockey, and candle-making. Meals include snack Friday night after arrival; full breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday (coffee break snacks, too); and breakfast and lunch on Sunday. If you would like childcare, please contact us at CLS (lsm@clsnet.org)—if there is sufficient need, we will provide childcare.

Attorney Lodging: Attorneys and families will be staying in the hotel-style Lakeview Lodge, a very nice facility located adjacent to our meeting space. The rate for the lodge is $290 for the weekend (total for 2 nights).

This year we are limited to the 18 rooms in the Lodge (occupancy up to 4 per room), on a first-come, first-served basis (we will keep a waiting list). The rooms include two full-size beds (perfect for splitting the cost with a roommate). Please register NOW to guarantee availability in Lakeview Lodge.

Please note: If you are an attorney who has been practicing fewer than five years, you may opt to stay in the law student cabins (see below), rather than paying for a room in the Lakeview Lodge.

In addition, we have limited scholarships available for those who would like to attend the retreat but cannot due to finances. Please contact Joan McElveen at lsm@clsnet.org to request financial assistance.

Law Students

The law student fee for the entire weekend is only $75! This covers meals, lodging, programming, and transportation! Student spouses are invited to register for $25. Space is limited! We will save spaces on a first-come, first-served basis, so please register as soon as possible! Please contact Joan McElveen directly with any registration questions at lsm@clsnet.org.

Student Registration includes:

  • Lodging in 12-bed/2 BR/2 Bath cabins (these are all-male and all-female cabins);
  • Meals (Friday night snack, Saturday breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner, and Sunday breakfast and lunch);
  • All activities (tubing, cross-country skiing, candle-making, observatory, and broomball),
  • Transportation: Free bus chartered from NYC (advance registration online required).

Transportation & Directions

A bus will be provided from Manhattan, NY to Frost Valley. Any registrant may utilize this option but must request a seat by contacting Joan McElveen (lsm@clsnet.org) because seating is limited. The bus is free for students and their spouses and may be reserved online. The cost is $55 per person for attorneys. An email will be sent out to everyone who we have listed on the bus Monday, February 19, 2018, detailing such things as what to bring and what not to bring and what to expect. The bus will likely pick up students on 10th Avenue between 31st and 32nd Streets in Manhattan. The departure time from Manhattan will likely be 4:00 pm.

Those who plan on driving to the retreat should follow the directions laid out on the Frost Valley YMCA website. GPS in that area will be misleading. Once you arrive please check-in (5:30 pm – 8:30 pm) at the main administration building and you will be directed to your lodging and our opening session! Check in opens at 5:00 PM on Friday.

For more information, please email Joan at lsm@clsnet.org.
