Description:

The Christian Legal Society (CLS) is a fellowship of Christians dedicated to serving Jesus Christ through the practice of law (Attorney Ministries), the defense of religious freedom and life (the Center for Law and Religious Freedom), by nurturing and encouraging Christian law students (Law Student Ministries), and provide Christian legal aid to the poor and needy (Christian Legal Aid).

CLS is seeking an Attorney Ministries Director for our headquarters in Springfield, Virginia. The position is responsible for the high-level management and coordination of this department to encourage and train legal professionals on how to integrate the Word of God and their faith in Jesus Christ with their professional and personal lives.

The position reports to and works closely with the CEO as well as all other department heads to promote the mission of CLS. As one of the four main ministries in CLS, this person will also work in tandem with the director of Law Student Ministries (LSM) to assist with mentorships, activities and the transition of law students to lawyers. The ideal candidate will have several years of professional experience; be pleasant, friendly, and amicable; be proficient with Microsoft Office applications and computer literate; and detail oriented. Familiarity with law and lawyering is desired but not necessary. However, the individual must have a heart for Christians in this field. Experience with nonprofit associations and boards is a plus as well as knowledge of or experience with association management software, databases and/or Blackbaud. Position requires occasional travel.

 

Responsibilities include:

The Director will be responsible for the network of attorney chapters and attorneys throughout the U.S. They also will assist with newly formed attorney chapters. They communicate with all attorney chapters, build partnerships with diverse groups, set up online conversations on current topics, coordinate regional retreats and assist with the national conference, including:

  • Direct, establish and maintain vibrant attorney chapters across the nation
  • Find innovative ways to advance the broader CLS mission including management of: The Christian Lawyer magazine, mentorship program, Supreme Court swearing in and a variety of other projects.
  • Establish relationships and communicate regularly with current and future attorney chapters and chapter leaders.
  • Coordinate membership mailings, renewals, and new member packets.
  • Maintain and update current contact list in Blackbaud (RE)
  • Communicate with our members and affiliate partners, including a monthly newsletter for chapter leaders
  • Organize and plan attorney events, including online webinars, regional retreats, mentorship program, and national conference events.
  • Answer general public and membership inquiries via email and telephone.
  • Update website information, including attorney ministries’ chapter pages, membership forms, referral directory, job board, and other pertinent information.
  • Supervise an AM coordinator who will assist in all of these functions.
  • Work closely with Law Student Ministries Director on many levels, including but not limited to co-supervising Barnabas/Regional coordinators
  • Collating resources for the benefit of existing and new attorney chapters
  • Writing articles, speaking, and generally promoting CLS and our mission.

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Five or more years of management and leadership experience as staff or volunteer, in a non-profit, preferably in a faith-based organization.
  • J.D. degree and legal practice experience preferred.
  • Mature Christian faith.
  • Ability to work independently in planning and implementing programs.
  • Ability to articulate the scriptural basis of vocation and calling
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and relationship-building skills.
