In 1985 Walt Barbee, an airline pilot and resident of Fairfax County, became aware of the concerning material being taught in his children’s sex education program in the Fairfax public school system. Other parents became interested in helping him develop a strategy to have the program changed.   Walt quickly discovered that parents in other localities were fighting the same battle and soon expanded into a statewide change in the law and the need to address additional family issues such as abortion and school choice.   Out of this effort The Family Foundation was birthed and in 1988 they associated with Focus on the Family.  In time, The Family Foundation established five biblical principles as guideposts for advocacy and established their mission to empower families by applying biblical worldview and founding principles to culture and public policy.  They inspire Virginians, pastors and legislators to engage in meaningful conversations and productive actions that advance these biblical principles in the public square; to incorporate the unique, God-given passions of individuals and organizations into the work, thereby increasing the number of laborers, and, to instigate carefully chosen political and cultural battles that prompt necessary changes to the law in Virginia in eight principle areas.

The Family Foundation serves as a “think tank” for these purposes and is the leading lobbyist for family-oriented issues in the Virginia legislature.  The Family Foundation began Founding Freedoms Law Center (FFLC) two years ago to advance its purposes in the judicial area. FFLC has two lawyers.

Primary Responsibilities: The Family Foundation of Virginia is seeking a seasoned attorney with experience in state and federal courts for the Founding Freedoms Law Center. The attorney will be an active participant in constitutional litigation, including the discovery process, briefs, trials, appellate work, and amicus briefing. The attorney ideally should have 10+ years of experience and experience in the conservative legal movement and ideally experience in trial and appellate courts, administrative law, policymaking, legislation, and/or media — and a proven record of accomplishment. The applicant must have strong written and research skills and be able to work collaboratively with others. In addition, there likely will be media appearances and public speaking to grassroots, policymakers and legislators, so the candidate for this job must be articulate, nimble on his/her feet and not be shy!  Applicants must be licensed to practice law in Virginia, eligible to seek admission by waiver, or commit to pass the Virginia Bar Exam within the first year of employment.


  • Advise parents, allies and others who request information about their legal rights concerning issues within the areas of TFF’s purposes
  • Conduct legal research on issues within the areas of TFF’s purposes
  • Draft pleadings, conduct discovery, and help edit amicus briefs
  • If interested, write op-eds, give interviews, and generally engage with the media
  • Engage in public speaking at conferences, churches, and to other stakeholders


  • Juris Doctor
  • Membership in good standing of a state bar and eligibility for admission to the bar of the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Strong commitment to TFF’s purposes
